Help Us Keep Collection Safe and Efficient

To ensure smooth and safe trash and recycling collection for everyone in our community, please follow these simple guidelines:

Set your carts out by 7 AM on collection day.
Be sure to bring them back in within 24 hours.

Cart Placement Tips

  • Keep lids fully closed. Do not overfill your carts.
  • Place carts at least 3 feet apart and away from cars, mailboxes, tree branches, or anything else that might block access.
  • Position carts with wheels and handles facing the curb so collection trucks can easily lift them.

Trash and Recycling Guidelines

  • All trash should be placed in plastic bags.
  • Recycling should be loose in the cart, not in bags.
  • Do not place hot ashes, coals, sharps (needles, lancets, razor blades), medications, or household hazardous waste in your carts.

Recycling Drop-off Locations

The drop-off centers accept glass, cardboard, mixed paper, plastic, and cartons.

4009 Lucia Lane (Behind the old McDonald’s on Airport Road)

2950 Agua Fria St (by Fire Station #5)

2600 Buckman Road (Buckman Road Recycling & Transfer Station )

The Buckman Road Recycling & Transfer Station (BuRRT) is open Monday-Sunday from 8:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m.

For more information on BuRRT visit the Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency’s website: https://www.sfswma.org/.

Start typing the name of your item to find out if it belongs in your blue recycling cart, your green trash cart, or somewhere else.

Residential Cart Repair/Replacement: email us your address, service day, and the serial number located on the front of your cart.

Click here to download the Rate Ordinance- Cart Replacement Fee

A cart replacement fee of $60.00 will be charged to customers due to negligence other than normal wear and tear and for requests for replacement due to customer preference.  We do not charge customers for damage caused by collection vehicles or workers.

Carts should only be used for household trash and recycling.  Carts are most often damaged by customers when hot ashes, chemicals, or even fireworks are placed in the cart. These things can cause the combustion of trash or recyclables that damage or melt the plastic resin. Carts can also be damaged when loaded with remodeling or landscaping materials such as rock and brick. Make sure the ashes are dead out and cold.

Missed Refuse (Trash) or Recycling Pick up:  call 505-955-2200 or email us with your address and contact information.

Click Here to find your collection day.

Residents may request a fee-based, special pick-up by calling the Environmental Service Division at 505-955-2200. Callers will be scheduled for the next available collection slot, but no same-day service is offered. Fee: $50.00 for eight cubic yards or less; $10.00 for each additional cubic yard beyond the first eight cubic yards (tax will be added to all charges).

Customers whose Public Utilities account is delinquent for more than thirty days are not eligible for service.

Missed Service

If ESD did not collect your trash on schedule, please ensure that it was out by 7:00 a.m., that it was not blocked or overflowing, and that the cart did not contain unacceptable items. NOTE: If you did not set your cart out before the collection truck came by, that is NOT a missed service; we have real-time GPS applications that confirm the time of collection for each address. Please pull your cart back in, and we will see you next week!

If we did miss you, and none of these conditions apply, call 505-955-2200 or click here to use our electronic reporting system.

Inclement Weather

For the page, ESD operators will continue collecting trash and recycling routes during inclement weather. Service may be slower during extreme weather events. Click here to stay up to date and get the Recycle Coach app.

Residential Collection Rates

The cost of basic residential curbside service is $23.10 with tax per month, which includes tax and is included in your City of Santa Fe monthly utility bill.

Residential refuse and recycling collection is provided weekly using City-issued rolling carts. Each residence receives one 96-gallon green trash cart and one 64-gallon blue recycling cart.  A larger recycling cart may be provided upon request, or one additional recycling cart may be provided with no extra fees.  Residents may order additional trash carts and additional fees apply to trash.  Carts are collected using an automated truck. Drivers do not typically exit the vehicle.

Eligibility for Reduced Rates

Low-income residents may qualify for reduced rates for residential utility charges. Click here for more information and to apply for a rate reduction.

Special Assistance

Elder persons or persons with restricted mobility, which renders them unable to place trash and recyclables curbside, may be eligible for special assistance from the Environmental Services Division.  This service may include entry onto private property or into residential units to remove waste from porches, portals, or garages.

Saving water is always in season!

Santa Fe is a high desert city with an annual precipitation that’s highly variable from year to year. Long ago, our community collectively agreed to embody a waterwise lifestyle to help ensure that we secure a reliable water supply for the future. Residents and visitors alike are always encouraged to make every drop count!

The City Water Conservation Office is a WaterSense partner.

Save Water Santa Fe is the official online hub for the City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office.

Established in 1997, the Water Conservation Office is recognized nationally for its innovative water conservation efforts. The Water Conservation Program has paved the way for a water-wise city, resulting in a community committed to continually reducing its annual water consumption. The Water Conservation Office remains dedicated to establishing programs that encourage and incentivize residential and commercial customers to save water and educate youth about the importance of water conservation.

In 2025, the Water Conservation Office was moved from the Water Division into the newly created Conservation & Sustainability Division – both divisions are within the Public Utilities Department. Formerly known as @savewatersantafe on social media, its social media presence now falls under the larger @sustainablesantafe umbrella.
